Cluttered Desk, Cluttered Mind?

Cluttered Desk, Cluttered Mind?

Does a cluttered desk make for a cluttered mind? This question has been studied and debated for decades since Albert Einstein's famous quote:
"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"
Some of the most brilliant people have/had cluttered desks, one of which was Albert Einstein- a German-born theoretical physicist, who developed the general theory of relativity. You may best remember him by his famous equation: E = mc2.
Whether your desk is incredibly cluttered or magnificently organized, you probably have some pretty positive traits. Would you like to know what they are? Read on if so...
People with cluttered desks are usually:
  • extremely creative
  • exceptionally smart
  • able to focus on one project at a time, even while surrounded by absolute craziness
People with tidy desks are usually:
  • quite organized
  • conventional in following procedures and completing tasks
  • apt to make healthier choices, therefore boosting their well-being
Some of these findings were based on a study done by a team of researchers headed by Kathleen Vohs at the University of Minnesota: http://pss.sagepub.com/content/24/9/1860.
Considering these traits, what is the best answer to Einstein's question?

What is an empty desk a sign of? Well, different people may have different answers to this question. I can tell you that I like a tidy desk, maybe not an empty desk, but definitely a clean, uncluttered, and organized desk for the following reasons:
  • a cluttered desk in my office DOES equal a cluttered mind
  • I cannot focus on one thing when ten things are in my face!
  • I work the same way in my kitchen... I cannot cook dinner when I have a sink full of dishes!
Can those with tidy desks also be creative? Maybe. My husband is extremely creative. He doesn't have a desk, so using the kitchen comparison, he can and does cook surrounded by craziness. As he creates a mess cooking, I pick up and clean around him!
How about you? Do you have a cluttered desk or a tidy desk?

What are your thoughts about whether or not a cluttered desk contributes to a cluttered mind?

What do you think an "empty" desk is a sign of?

I used to work for a company that required staff to clear everything off their desk at night except for the phone, in tray (empty, of course) and a framed picture. Even though I was there less than a year, the habit has stuck with me.

I personally can't work in a cluttered environment, but I know people who manage it quite well. We're all different, and that keeps life interesting.

A company that requires an empty in tray at the end of each shift... I'm sure that kept employees quite productive through the day! SMART! Thank you so much for commenting, Janet!

They used to confiscate anything left out, then one day someone found where it was all kept - there was sure a lot of stuff!

I think an empty desk denotes an empty mind!! LOL
My stuff is always messy, but I work in it just fine.
Who knows whether or not I could do better work in an un-cluttered environment????
Thank you Nicole for un-cluttering me!!

Melinda, that response makes a lot of sense! LOL

If you can manage to keep track of your daily to-dos, bills, and other important papers & assignments within a messy space, and the environment is a healthy one, then I guess as the saying goes, why fix what's not broken?

Thank you for your thoughts and as always, you're welcome! Thank YOU for the opportunity to help you declutter!!

What Our Clients are Saying:

"My mother had lived in her home for over 65 years when she passed, so the house was filled to the brim. Nicole and her team were outstanding. They came to the house, presented a plan to remove all of the items through an online auction. They inventoried all items, separated the items into individual lots and managed the auction, down to the last item being paid for, picked up and removed from the house! The payment for their services and transfer of the proceeds was seamless. I was left with an empty house that I could then get ready for sale. Perfect! Couldn't have asked for a better solution to an overwhelming situation!"
